SGA presidential election won by default

The 2015 Student Government Association elections have come to an end, with Alexis Quackenbush being named the new SGA president.

The presidential race was originally between Quackenbush and former SGA Chief Justice Timothy “Tim” Reling, but Reling dropped out. Due to this taking place after the deadline to run, Quackenbush took the presidential position by default.

The reasons for Reling’s dropping from the presidential election race were both academic and personal, as he has a multitude of responsibilities and little time for being with family.

“The decision to withdraw from the SGA Presidential elections was a necessary one, as it was made so I could spend more time with my wife,” said Reling. “Between working on my thesis, holding my graduate assistantship at the Office of Student Conduct and attending night classes to obtain my master’s degree, the amount of time I get to spend with my wife is already limited to the weekends. The SGA Presidency on top of that would make the time that I get to spend with her virtually non-existent. I made the decision to withdraw because I would like to spend as much time with her as I can before beginning my Ph.D. at LSU in fall 2016. When I begin with that, I will be busier than ever.”

Though he has dropped from the election, Reling’s SGA career may or may not be coming to an end. Nevertheless, he still plans on supporting the organization as long as he is on campus.

“As for my future intentions with SGA, I am unsure,” said Reling. “I’m hesitant to make any commitments at this time. However, I will continue to support SGA in all their future endeavors.”

In addition to Quackenbush taking the position of president, the positions of SGA vice president and chief justice will now be occupied by Bradley Watson and former SGA President Stephanie Travis.
