Despite dodgy weather, Southeastern’s baseball team won all three games in their war against McNeese State University this past weekend.

When they first faced off Friday, April 17, the Lions wasted no time in achieving two runs in the bottom of the first inning when junior designated hitter Daniel Midyett hit a home run.

For five innings, the Lions held back the Cowboys, until the sixth inning when the Cowboys caught up.

Junior outfielder Julian Service sealed the win for the Lions when he hit a two-run homerun past left field.

The teams’ next encounter was postponed to Sunday due to early rain on Saturday. Sunday was a double header that began at 12:00 p.m.

In the second inning the Lions shot out four runs, taking control of the game.

“These guys answer the challenge all year long. It’s all about taking it one game at a time,” said head coach Matt Riser.

They continued to score two more runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings, then one in the sixth and finally four in the seventh.

Sophomore outfileder Ryan Byers hit a double to left-center in both third-inning and the sixth-inning run on a sacrifice fly. In the seventh he continued to drive in two more runs and accomplished a total of six RBI’s.

Senior infielder Kevin Carr also hit a home run in the seventh.

“It feels good. You hit a good game, stay constant in the play and really have to execute in all the little things as well. Today, all weekend, we did a really good job executing from beginning to end,” said Carr.

The win was earned by junior pitcher Jake Johnson, who scattered three runs in six innings. The Lion walked three and fanned six batters. Senior pitcher Kyle Keller gained his first career save, tossing the final three innings and forcing three strikeouts.

Pitching in the final game was junior Kyle Cedotal. Cedotal struck out nine batters, walked two and allowed two runs, one of which was earned.

The Lions had three runs in the second inning and followed up with another five in the third.

Junior catcher Chris Eades shot a double, allowing both senior infielder Brett Hoffman and sophomore infielder Kennon Menard to make it home. With Eades on third, sophomore outfielder Jacob Seward hit a single and to send his teammate  home.

For four innings the Lions led the game 8-0, until the Cowboys scored two runs in the seventh inning, but the Lions followed by another run of their own.

Southeastern’s players were pleased with the amount of wins they have had and will use the motivation to continue to represent the university.

“Getting 30 wins is always huge, that’s more than what most teams will get. That gives us the chance to keep rolling, and it’s a really good feeling,” said Cedotal.

The Lions will face the Ragin Cajuns of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

    Ryan Byers

Sophomore outfielder Ryan Byers was a large contributer to the Lions offense. The Ponchatoula native racked up eight runs during the doubleheader. Byers was awarded Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for his efforts.
