The Lady Lions softball team was defeated in the three game series against the McNeese State Cowgirls.

The games took place Friday, April 17 with a double header on Sunday, April 19 with a score of 5-9, 3-9 and 6-10.

Junior outfielder Katie Lacour had two hits to run her league-leading total to 69, breaking the previous single-season school record of 68 set by Dee Rancher in 1999. Freshman shortstop Sydney Booker tied the single-season school record set by Southeastern Athletics Hall of Famer Voncia Bookman in 1992 with her team-high eighth triple of the season.

In addition, junior designated player Amber Sather drew three walks to run her single-season total to 36, besting the program record of 35 she set last season. The Kennedale, Texas native also holds the school career record with 102 free passes.

Senior shortstop Megan Moore led the Lady Lions at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Lacour, freshman outfielder Kinsey Nichols and senior second baseman Vanessa Eng contributed two hits apiece. Nichols also was credited with an RBI.

Head coach Pete Langlois explained the strength of Friday’s game.

“We hit the ball really well, that was our strength we hit well and we made all the plays, but they made two home runs,” said Langlois.

Langlois highlighted the key players as they broke records at Friday night’s game.

“Katie LaCour played outstanding again tonight Booker hit outstanding and Kinsey Nichols hit outstanding Megan Moore had a career day out here with a homerun. They played well,” said Langlois.

The team held it together and ahead until the end of the game.

Southeastern fixed a threat to end it in the bottom of the eighth inning. Consecutive singles by LaCour and Nichols put a pair on with two outs, but junior pitcher Emily Vincent recovered to retire Booker and keep the score deadlocked.

MSU took its first lead in the top of the ninth inning. Taylor Bishop walked Piancastelli, Vincent and freshman third baseman Bryanna Castro to load the bases. Castro then came off the bench and lined a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence. That was more than enough for Vincent, who retired Southeastern in order to secure the victory.

Langlois and the team left the field with a lost, but explained how he wanted Saturday’s game to go.

“This game changed in one inning and that made a difference, but hopefully we come out here and execute,” said Langlois.

Saturday’s game was canceled due to the threat of rain and moved to Sunday afternoon. The Lady Lions lost both games Sunday afternoon.

Game one McNeese State jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning against Southeastern senior Tori Stamper (2-5). Freshman third baseman Castro, Vincent and freshman designated player Morgan Catron each drove in runs to give the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead.

Southeastern cut into the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lacour drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI triple by Nichols. Nichols would later score on an RBI single by Booker to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Lady Lions did not score for the last four innings.

Game two MSU took advantage of a Lady Lion error to take a 2-0 lead without the benefit of the hit in the top of the second inning. The Cowgirls added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. MSU were benefitted by two Southeastern errors to secure the 10-6 win.

The Lady Lions fought hard and missed the mark, but did not give up.

“We did well we always try and pull through it but things just didn’t really go our way, but we didn’t give up,” said Bishop.

The Lady Lions will play in Baton Rouge against Southern University on Tuesday, April 21 from 4-5 p.m.
