Twenty-one teams headed to the mud pits this year to battle it out for the 8th Annual Swamp Bowl volleyball tournament. Three teams covered in dirt came out on top.

Sponsored by Recreational Sports and Wellness and Campus Activities Board, the event was held in front of the Pennington Student Activities Center on Friday. KSLU provided the music, amplification system and free T-shirts for the winners, 4D provided all-in-one pre-workout and health supplement drinks and CAB provided $700 worth of jambalaya, purchased from Swamp Box Cafe.

Sororities, fraternities, student organizations and others who were in attendance made up three female, nine male and nine co-ed teams, who played double-elimination rounds. The “Ninja Turtles” won the women’s division, “Dirty Mike and the Boyz” were the champions for the men’s division and “BCM Spikes Back” took home the trophy from the co-ed teams.

“Everyone should participate once before they graduate from Southeastern,” said Kyle Granat, junior kinesiology major and winner from “Dirty Mike and the Boyz.” “From an avid volleyball player to a complete beginner, Swamp Bowl is catered so that everyone can have fun with their friends, not to mention enjoy free jambalaya.”

The first team to douse their competition with mud splashes was the “Ninja Turtles,” a team founded by Tina Nguyen, senior business management major.

“It feels pretty great to win; this is our third year playing as the ‘Ninja Turtles’ and this is our third time winning it,” said Amber McArthur, senior athletic training major. “We don’t practice. You can’t really practice for this, but we have a good team chemistry because we also have an indoor volleyball [intramural] team. It’s fun just to get out, go play in some mud and relax before finals.”

After a few hours of diving in the mud, “BCM Spikes Back” danced in a victory celebration. They were especially ecstatic because they fought for this title for three consecutive years and finally reached the top of the mud mountain.

“It’s awesome to see the growth and it’s cool to be on a team that got better in the competition,” said junior education major Jasmine Webb. “We [“BCM Spikes Back”] got sixth place our first year, third our second year and first this year, so third time’s the charm.”

The all-men’s team “Dirty Mike and the Boyz” volleyed their way to the top and after winning, laid down in the brown water, embracing the simulated swamp for a group picture.

“It feels awesome to win, especially when you have a team full of some of your best friends and everyone is able to work together,” said Granat.
