Sigma Alpha Iota debuts on campus

As new semesters roll around, the university is welcomed with a new litter of individuals, all having different hobbies, as well as common purposes and goals. The majority of organizations here on campus all range from having individuals who share the same love for a particular leisure activity and want to allow their passion to become heard all around campus.

As other campus organizations continue to grow, the university has paved the way for a new organization, the Mu Rho Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota which was chartered Saturday, April 25.

According to sai-national.org, Sigma Alpha Iota is an international women’s music fraternity and was founded on June 12, 1903 at the University School of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Sigma Alpha Iota is dedicated to the support, commitment and dedication of female musicians. It also is not limited to only music majors, but also individuals with a minor and a passion for the art of music.

Kamah Asha Wilson, senior social work major, is the founding charter member of the Mu Rho Chapter.

“I was adopted into this sisterhood, an even bigger family, in 2010 and afterwards when I transferred to study at Southeastern, my heart longed for the fellowship and bond of sisters. I decided to find other women who wanted and valued the same things,” said Wilson. “What I found was more than I could have ever imagined. These women are incredible, talented and precious. The sisters to come should be honored to be amongst women of such high esteem. Through Sigma Alpha Iota and the Mu Rho Chapter, I found a creative rich experience and together we made history.”

Senior integrative biology major Kayla Turner wished to maintain a connection to music through affiliation with the organization.

“I sought a way to remain connected to the musical world after graduation. Being a biology major, I don’t have much of a chance to perform or to practice or to be around fellow musicians,” said Turner. “This organization provides me with that chance, even after graduation. I’m greatly looking forward to moving away and finding an alumni chapter to take me under its wing.”

Both ladies appreciate how the organization represents “women creating and embodying music” and “women who seek to spread the beauty and the wonder of the music throughout the globe.”

Many individuals often describe music as the universal expression of all emotions, which makes it enjoyable for everyone around the world. As the Mu Rho Chapter continues to grow as an organization all while expressing their entertainment throughout campus, they have many things in store for the future.

“Sigma Alpha Iota is about celebrating diversity and excellence among its members through the support of sisters. We’re a group of real ladies doing real things,” said Cheyenne Moore, sophomore vocal performance major. “We accept you no matter what your differences are. In fact, we celebrate it.”
