Will Johnson, Hunter Gsell, Eric Feilden, Neil Bourgeois, David Murden, Austin Rogers and Jeremy Yanez (From Left to Right) are members of Pi Kappa Alpha. Recently, the colony was officially chartered to join the Interfraternity Council on campus.

Having received their charter, Pi Kappa Alpha joins the other eight Interfraternity Council Member organizations on campus.

PIKE’s headquarters had set goals they felt needed to be reached before the colony could become a chapter.

“These goals ranged anything from community service and philanthropy to recruitment and how the colony functioned as a whole with positions on our executive board,” said junior biology major and chapter president Jeremy Yanez.

The chapter’s journey has been an exciting yet challenging one as they worked together to find their “way and culture” on campus.

“As president, I just had to get everyone motivated enough to keep pushing towards this goal and to make sure everyone was doing what they were supposed to be doing with the help of my executive board,” said Yanez.

Now that PIKE is officially recognized as a chapter, members plan to continue old traditions while also creating new events students can begin to look forward to within the upcoming years.

“We are still looking to hold events such as Pike’s Peak and bring back the comedy night that was initially started from the beginning,” said Yanez.

The chapter is also very excited to begin working alongside other organizations to raise more money.

“We want to try to set some new traditions such as a Pike Fire Truck Pull to raise money for philanthropies which, would include participation from other organizations on campus and would also raise money for their philanthropies, and continue to do the dunking booth we did at the end of this past spring semester,” said Yanez.

While becoming chartered is a big step for the chapter, being able to live in Greek Village is a huge step, as they have just received a house on campus.

“We are looking to move in at the end of this week and get everyone settled in. Getting this house is also a huge step for our organization because this will help us on campus and internally,” said Yanez.

PIKE plans to continue to follow their motto, SLAG (Scholars, Leadership, Athletes and Gentlemen).

Yanez explained what each letter meant to him as leader of the chapter. He sees gentlemen as being “most important when it comes to recruiting men into the fraternity, because anyone can be a leader, but we pride ourselves on being gentlemen.”

The chapter’s scholarship is exemplified as they were recognized with the highest GPA on campus for the Spring 2015 semester.

“Leaders, as in, we want men who are going to step up in situations and who are also going to stand up and do the right thing, [and] athletes meaning we are looking for men who are competitive in everything they do,” said Yanez.

Since the organization is new, Yanez believes joining the chapter will truly be a unique experience.

“Being new and still growing, there’s plenty of room for leadership and ideas,” said Yanez. “This allows the young men to build those leadership skills and find out who they really are and what they’re made of.”
