A busy college summer should be spent in fun

    Megan McCormick-Staff Reporter

For some, summer marks the closing of textbooks until August. For others, summer is just a continuation of the never-ending cycle of waking up ridiculously early, hitting the books and returning to work. For me, my summer consists of a combination of fun while remaining involved in school.

I decided, like other students, to take summer classes in order to not fall behind on my classes required in my respected curriculum. However, my dilemma is the two hour commute I would have to take to return to campus every day. Therefore, I enrolled in online classes. It is the best of both worlds; I am able to further my education while lounging around my house throughout the summer. And when I am not lounging or typing an English paper, I’m out enjoying my two months off.

At the beginning of the summer, my family and I took flight to go to the most magical place on earth. Yes, I am talking about Disney World in Florida. I know what some of you are thinking; why is a college student going to Disney? You, my friends, are the ones who need to take a load off and wind down. Summer is all about having fun. What better way to do so than to take a vacation? Whether you plan a trip to another state or to go hiking on trails in one of Louisiana’s state parks, a vacation is a must during summertime.

While some cannot afford taking off of work to go on a vacation to another state, that is not an excuse to be a Debbie Downer all summer. There are other activities students can partake in when work and school have completely consumed their lives.

For example, a simple night out with friends is always a great way to let go. For those like me who do not enjoy “Turnt Up Thursdays,” don’t fret. A night out does not have to mean being pushed around a crowded bar.

Instead, have a game night or movie marathon with some friends who you’ve disconnected with over the break.

A few weeks ago, I had to come to campus for a meeting. Instead of wasting gas driving to and from in the same day, I decided to make the most of my night in Hammond. After the meeting, my friends and I ate dinner, racked up on dollar candy at Walgreens and went to see a new movie at the AMC Palace. It was a perfect way to de-stress.

Many people get the impression that one must spend tons of money or travel far to have fun, but that is not always the case. Instead, one can go to the park, hit the gym, have a swim day or even just take a drive to clear their mind.

Summertime should be carefree; don’t make yours anything else.
