    Greek Games debuts

The fourth day of Greek Week saw Greek organizations assemble at the Strawberry Stadium  to support their team in the “Greek Games.”

The event organized by Order of Omega consisted of the three-legged race, Achilles heel balloon pop and Hungry, Hungry Hippos.

President of Order of Omega Bryce Cothern described how the new events inserted in Greek Week were organized.

“This is the first year we tried to do the Greek games,” said Cothern. “We used to do tug of war. Just wanted to try and do something different this year, and I think it went really well. It was kinda plan as you go. We had a set plan of things, and we had a few hiccups. But we got it all done, and everybody was happy about it.”

Cothern shared the inspiration behind the three games at the event.

“We had seen troubles with tug of war in the past, so we decided to do a ‘Greek Games,’” said Cothern. “They’ve done in the past the three-legged race. This year, the overall theme is Greek gods and goddesses. So, for the three-legged race, we did 26.2 yards. It’s like a minimarathon. Then the Achilles heel balloon pop, you tie the balloons around your ankles, and I got the idea from Phi Mu and Sig Tau’s philanthropy day. Richard Davis had done the Hungry, Hungry Hippos. That’s where we got the idea from.”

Member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and senior business administration major Tyron McLemore was the winner in the Hungry, Hungry Hippos game. He shared his thoughts on the events of the first “Greek Games.”

“It was a good experience,” said McLemore. “Greek Week is always a good week for Greek organizations to come together. The hungry hippo game was actually shocking because I didn’t know how it worked, but we figured the technique to get the first place. We’re second here, but we’re first overall till tonight. So, I’m loving this week.”

Cothern expects the “Greek Games” to evolve over time along with the new members of Order of Omega.

“In April, the Order of Omega is gonna meet again,” said Cothern. “We’re gonna go over the rules once again and see what worked and what didn’t and make some tweaks there. I see that we’re gonna keep the games. The games may be different. They may change depending on what ideas come through.”

McLemore suggested an addition to the games.

“We should implement something new next year called chubby bunny,” said McLemore. “Instead of eating hotdogs, we should do chubby bunny where we could count how many marshmallows you could put in your mouth and say chubby bunny. That would be funny and competitive.”
