Trumpeter to play in first guest artist recital of series

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts will be hosting a guest artist recital series to include a variety of performers representing their program and to provide students with distinctive knowledge.
With financial support from Southeastern’s Arts and Lectures Committee, the department organized the series starting Thursday, Jan. 30 and ending on Thursday, Feb. 13.
“Our obligation to a well-rounded and comprehensive creative educational experience is highlighted by an active series of nationally and internationally renowned musicians who engage in recitals, lectures and master classes during their visits,” said Dr. Kenneth Boulton, interim department head. “Collectively, these performers represent a broad cross-section of our program and present our students with unique and insightful expertise.”
Richard Rulli, trumpet instructor at the University of Arkansas, will be featured in the first recital on Thursday for a solo performance with piano accompaniment.
Logan Place, instructor of trumpet, knew Rulli through working together at Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp.
“We were both trumpet instructors, and we would teach technique classes and lessons and trumpet sectionals,” said Place. “We also got to play in the band and orchestra there and have been working together up there for the past six summers.”
In addition to the solo recital at 7:30 p.m., Rulli will also host a masterclass to work with trumpet students.
“I invited him because not only is he an internationally known trumpet performer and teacher, but also because it gives our trumpet students a chance to work with someone from a major university outside of the state,” said Place. “Plus it gives the students more possibilities for graduate schools and gives them varying opinions on trumpet playing.”
The series will include five performances. All except one will be held in Pottle Auditorium throughout the next two weeks.
The first two performances will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30. The Bergsma Trio, a newly founded ensemble, will perform at 2 p.m., and Richard Rulli, trumpet player, will perform later that evening at 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Feb. 5 a Yarn/Wire Ensemble will be performing at 7 p.m. The following Wednesday, Feb. 12, Paul Christopher will give a cello performance at 7:30 p.m. in Pottle Annex Recital Hall. The series will conclude on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. with a performance given by Vance Woolf on the trumpet.
